Hi Samantha! This is kind of like a deep fried biscuit without the yeast. Not the exact same, they are a little sweeter. πŸ™‚

I’m so sorry to hear this happened, Faith! This typically happens if the oil isn’t quite warm enough. Did you only do 2-3 at a time? Did you let the oil warm back up after each batch?

As someone with very little baking experience, this recipe was AWESOME! They also tasted really good! 5/5

They were good, but they were extremely greasy and took way longer to deep fry than they said. The temperature of my oil was 350f, but it took 3 minutes and 30 seconds for 1 tbsp-sized balls. They’re overall alright, but I wouldn’t make them again.

Hi Sharon! You could certainly try to pipe some jelly or custard into these donut holes after they are done cooking. It won’t hold a lot because they are small, but I think it could be done.

In reply to Mel.

My family is currently staying in a vacation apartment with no oven and really wanted something sweet, besides a microwave mug cake with a weird texture! These were just what we wanted! The perfect fluffiness and so delicious!! They were gone in no time. I just love your website, your sweet story, and love the fact you are very professional about testing all your recipes! Thanks again!

Hi Ash! I’m sorry to hear this happened! Did you make the dough balls larger? Was your oil temperature too hot? They may have just needed a little bit more time to cook. πŸ™

Simple recipe. I had all ingredients on hand. Freezing the butter was a plus! It made cutting in sooooo easy. I used salted butter with no extra salt. I rolled semi-warm holes into confectioners sugar, cinnamon sugar and once some plain ones were completely cooled I frosted lightly and rolled into sprinkles! The only thing I may try next next is to add a little bit of vanilla. Thanks so much for this recipe.

Hi Cath! Unfortunately I haven’t played around with it. I would probably attempt reducing some flour and adding cocoa powder, but I just can’t say for sure how to do it without having tried it. πŸ™

Hi! I’ve tried your recipe and it works so well. Was wondering if I can add in cocoa powder to make a chocolate donut version? How would you suggest I do it? I saw your other recipe using sourcream but I was hoping to make one without. Thank you very much!

Hi Janice! It’s not really a big deal. I will usually chase them around with the spider and dunk them a little bit to get them to cook all the way through but since they are smaller they do a pretty good job of cooking. πŸ™‚

you can air frying them at 350 for 4-9 minutes. shaking the basket at halfway. I would recommend pre-heating the air fryer. also testing one like the author recommended with the oil.
